What Do You Want?
September 7, 2025
Pastor Terry Fulks

21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Philippians 1:21 ESV

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
1 John 2:15–17

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Galatians 5:22–24 ESV

Are there only two answers to what anyone wants?

Here are the two values that are up for grabs.

1. Transient values

A. Economic values

  1. Financial stability
  2. Opportunity
  3. Recognition

B. American values

  1. Family ties
  2. Good health
  3. Sense of purpose

C. Psychological values

  1. Want to be loved
  2. Want to be valued
  3. Want to be happy

D. World’s values

  1. Desires of the flesh
  2. Desire of eyes
  3. Pride of life

2. Permanent values

A. Christ the person

  1. God/Man (John 1:1)
  2. Holy one of God John 6:68 (John 6:67–69)
  3. Light of the world  (John 8:12)

B. Christ the king

  1. Christ revealed as King (Revelation 19:16)
  2. Every knee to bow (Philippians 2:10–11)
  3. Kingdom lasts forever (Luke 1:32–33)

Christ the savior

  1. From penalty of sin (Romans 3:23–24)
  2. From power of sin (Romans 6:11)
  3. From presence of sin (Philippians 3:20–21)

“Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get.”
– Dale Carnegie

“The more you know who you are, and what you want, the less you let   things upset you.
– Stephanie Perkins

Points to ponder:

  • In the end there are only two paths to go by; one fleeting and the other is always there.
  • The world’s system of the transient is always undermining the world of eternal truth.
  • Choose this day the path of the transient or the path of Christ’s eternal truth.
  • Would you like to choose Christ and His path today?

Connection Prayer:
Lord, please help me surrender to you and place my faith in you.  Give me a hunger and thirst for you. I want to thank you for your light, life, love, and your truth. I now, with what faith I have, confess that you Jesus died on the cross for my sins, were buried, and rose from the dead on the third day. I take you as my Savior, Lord, and Leader. Please forgive me of my sins and thank you for your forgiveness. Help me to follow you all the days of my life. Amen.

Next steps for the new believer:

If you prayed the connection prayer with me:

  1. Pick up a new believer pack as you leave.
  2. Read John 3, three times before you go to bed tonight.
  3. Read the gospel of John all the way through by reading about ten verses a day.

Next steps for the believer:

  1. This week review the sermon notes at least twice.
  2. Everyday this week ask God to help you follow the permanent path.
  3. Examine your heart as to how much you are investing into His kingdom.
  4. Memorize Philippians 1:21
